Ligament Injuries

The Collateral and Palmar ligaments provide strength and stability to the joints of the fingers by reinforcing the joint capsule. The use of a "finger lock" when crack climbing places a huge stress on the finger joints but particularly the Collateral ligaments. A minor ligament strain may present with some pain and localised swelling but no noticable loss of joint stability. Significant pain, inflammation, and loss of stability in the joint may indicate ligament rupture or avulsion.
