Flexor Tendinopathies

Swelling can develop in the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) tendon or Flexor Digitorum Profundus (FDP) tendon. This is often referred to as tendonitis. The inflammatory reaction to injury occurs if too great a force is transmitted through the tendon. In climbers, this commonly occurs when an open handed grip is used on a small edge or pocket hold. Symptoms range from gradual increase in pain and swelling due to repetitive strain, to sudden -very painful- rupture or avulsion and loss of movement in the affected finger.
