Tendon Pulley Injuries

Annular ligaments act as pulleys to the tendons in fingers. When "crimping" a hold, huge forces are transmitted through the pulleys. The load on the A2 pulley is greatest so this is the most commonly injured. Symptoms range from minimal localised pain and swelling, associated with small partial tears, to significant pain and swelling, possibly even an audible pop that is associated with a complete rupture.
